Hello and welcome to Ursa Designs. www.ursadesigns.com is run by myself David O’Toole. I’m originally from Ireland and I’ve been into websites and related media since around 2001. My main gig is Advertising and Graphic Design, I love working on them. I’m into lots of different medias and creatives, from PNG, Video creation, to GIFs and Memes. I like working with Mockups too. I’m currently working on a ‘Get the Click’ technology. More on that to follow.
Internet Marketing Kangaroo
So its an about me page right? Well, regarding that, I’ve been into internet marketing and website building for over 12 years at this stage. Ever since I discovered Ken Evoy and his Sitesell program around 2002 or thereabouts, it was all about internet marketing, keywords, and getting traffic to websites. Now that was a real eye-opener to me at the time, I remember it well. It was a bit of a ‘light in the dark’ for me back then. The Kangaroo? Well I was living in Australia around this time when I first discovered Internet Marketing, and one night while out walking the dog I seen my first Kangaroo hopping across the road lol. It was also the first night I came across IM I distinctly recall, so everytime I hear the word ‘Kangaroo’, it immediately reminds me of my IM discovery. Does that make sense? Hmm only to me I guess. But that’s my story and I’m-a-schtickin to it ;).
From Joeys to IM Diplomas
Yup I’ve loved internet marketing since then, you get pretty passionate about it. I went on to study the subject and I ended up getting an Internet Marketing Diploma because of that.
Another qualification I managed to get which is very related to IM (as you can see, studying Internet Marketing gets you into using acronyms a lot) .. was an Adobe Photoshop Certificate. I use it for the website a lot, along with other similar tools. I think Photoshop is a great program, very powerful. But, like all Adobe programs it takes a while to get comfortable with it. I wish they didn’t make up their own language for their programs, but hey, you get used to it after constant use.
I was a musician for years, love my Electric Guitar. So the only ‘copywriting’ I was familiar with was CopyRIGHTING. I came across it a lot when I worked with Public Domain material. A different field altogether. But eventually I switched from one to the other. As a musician I was always keen on writing songs, writing lyrics. So this skill helped me in the actual copywriting area too. It was a case of combining my lyric writing (and love of words), with writing for my websites. Its funny how one thing leads into another. I use something called ‘Right Brain Thinking’ (thank you Betty Edwards) for both. This is to do with using your Subconscious mind to come up with endless ideas. Its like turning on a tap (fawcett) of ideas. Great for lyrics AND web copy. Its an area I love and studied for years, and I got myself certified for that too.
I went up to Newgrange recently with a friend of mine. I’ve been in love with this monument / archaeological site since I first seen it on a school trip many moons ago. Its just an amazingly inspiring place. I took a few photos up there, and I used them for a 3D eBook cover I was creating. I was happy with the shots I got, so I ran them through Photoshop to enhance them a little, and here’s the result I came up with. 3D eBook covers have gotta be one of my fave mediums to work with. There’s something magical about them.
This 3D Cover is for a website about positive thinking (more rightbrain related stuff) .. called www.posithinx.com – this one uses a graphic from the wonderful Pixabay site. I like working in this niche. The ‘Mindgames’ niche so to speak.
Another pet favorite graphic design of mine are ‘Cinemagraphs’. I think these can be pretty fascinating when designed well, and my ‘inner IMer’ mentions that they’re real eyecatchers for FB ads. Now this one I designed below, you gotta watch it for about 5 seconds before it reveals itself. Ok not one for an FB ad its too slow, but its one I like. Its branded to a site called www.socialdoorways.com
I mentioned Mockups earlier on. People are always asking ‘what’s a Mockup?’. Basically its a way to place a photograph into something like a Laptop or an iPhone. The best way to explain it is to show an example. I placed this photo I took in Dublin into a Computer. I think they look cool. Then they can be used for advertising purposes .. for example, in a Facebook Ad. I think that they add a touch of extra ‘clickability’ somehow, and they look a bit special. Fun to design aswell.
So when I’m not designing graphics .. I play Electric Guitar.
So that’s a little bit about myself and Ursa Designs, hope you enjoyed the read and graphics.
